This circular economy project will respond to a gap in UK recycling and waste handling provision. Led by Innovate Recycle Ltd, it will develop the UK’s first predominantly polypropylene carpet recycling facility.
Circa 500,000 tonnes of waste carpets are produced in the UK per annum and this is sent to landfill; burnt for power; or shredded for equine surfacing. Innovate Recycle will capture an increasing amount of this waste and, through a newly designed process, retrieve significant amounts of high grade, reusable polypropylene and calcium carbonate.
The company have an exclusive agreement in the UK on the proprietary US technology for a minimum of five years that deconstructs the carpet and intend to contribute strongly to the UK’s progress to a circular and net zero carbon economy.
