Companions Real Bread CIC runs a commercial bakery in Bedford.
The bakery was set up to support to ex-offenders in the local community who, having decided they want not to re-offend, are trying to build themselves a more positive lifestyle.
The Companions Real Bread CIC Outreach Project is a work placement programme. The programme introduces participants to the friendly and supportive environment of the bakery and outlines the benefits of the six-month volunteering placement that is offered. The benefits include a positive social network, meaningful occupation in the form of work experience and training, active listening to boost confidence and self-esteem, signposting to other local agencies for support with specific issues, and the sort of practical help and advice that is readily shared among friends.
The placement programme offers participants the opportunity to learn and/or develop generic work skills and specific skills relating to food production, as well as the opportunity to demonstrate these skills to potential employers.
To support participants to make the most of the programme, they regularly have one to one meetings with a Support Worker. During the sessions, they discuss strategies for the removal or mitigation of any barriers (psychological or physical) to further progress.
The programme also offers two free sessions with a work coach, a monthly skills and resilience study group, mock interviews, and the opportunity to gain a Foundation Food Safety certificate. As the placement progresses, further individual support is given to move participants on to either paid employment or other learning opportunities.
