Ecoflexibles

National printer with sustainability at its heart

Ecoflexibles provide innovative flexible packaging solutions to some of the nations most recognisable retailers. Having made significant investment in their printing programme in recent years, they were exploring innovative ways to become even more sustainable. They utilised the Resilience and Innovation Fund to make it happen.

Established in 2018, Ecoflexibles is a sustainable packaging company providing innovative solutions to brands, packers and retailers that require new flexible packaging designs to meet the needs of today’s environmentally aware consumer. They have extensive experience in the packaging and printing industry and offer packaging design and reprographics, secure production from packaging manufacturing partners in the UK and abroad.

Ecoflexibles utilises digital printing, a new technology in the flexible packaging printing industry, meeting the needs of key trends in the industry – declining run lengths, reduced lead times, sustainability, and pack customisation and personalisation.

They are the only packaging company in the UK utilising non-solvent, water-based inks. Where possible, their materials are completely recyclable too.

Nevertheless, Ecoflexibles recognised they could take their sustainability ambitions a step further.

In 2024, Ecoflexibles applied for a £50,000 grant to fund the purchase of a new slitter machine, to allow them to bring the entire printing process in house.

Previously, once the printing process was completed, Ecoflexibles would ship each master roll to a supplier to cut it to the required size. Not only did this incur transportation costs, but it also produced CO2 emissions, negatively impacting the environment.

Alongside the reduction in emissions, Ecoflexibles also recognised the opportunity to reduce lead times for their customers, and increase their employee head count.

Since the purchase and installation of the new slitting machine, Ecoflexibles estimate a £125,000 per year margin improvement. The ability to manage the entire process end-to-end also enables the organisation to purchase materials in larger orders, whilst reducing the total cost. The slitter also reduces waste by approximately 10%.  In the last month alone (October 24), they’ve employed four new members of staff to manage the increased workload.

“The support received by the Growth Hub team has been excellent. Both during the initial enquiry and throughout the application process” explained Matt Fracklow, Director. “The investment we’ve been able to make through the Resilience and Innovation Fund has allowed us to position ourselves as a market disruptor, and cemented our existing relationship with Fuji Film, and most importantly, continue operating sustainably.”
